This molar (back) tooth had extensive dental caries (tooth decay). The patient was suffering from sever toothache and earache. In the absence of quality dental treatment, such teeth will often be extracted. The patient however, did not wish to loose her tooth, and thankfully, she did not have to. We performed a pain-free Root Canal Treatment and thereafter, a filling was placed. Often after a Root Canal Treatment, we recommend the placing of a Crown. When a tooth has been extensively destroyed by dental caries, what is left of the tooth will usually be unable to withstand high chewing forces. For such teeth, we place crowns on them. In this case a gold crown was placed. One can alternatively choose to have a less expensive but equally effective metal and porcelain crown that is white and resembles the other teeth.
This front tooth had a cavity that was causing pain and sensitivity when eating. In the front teeth, cavities will usually form on the inner surface where it is harder to clean. You can also see that the teeth had brown stains and calculus. The cavity was filled using a tooth colored material that matched the rest of the tooth. Scaling was also done to remove the stains and calculus.
We sometimes put off seeing the dentist when our teeth have problems. By the time we go in for our dental appointment, a large part of the tooth has broken down. This tooth had an old amalgam (metal) filling that had given way due to dental decay. I removed the old filling and cleaned out the decayed part of the tooth. After placing a post, I opted to build up the tooth using a tooth colored filling material. The material attaches better to the tooth giving it more structural strength as opposed to an amalgam filling. A crown was scheduled for that tooth so as to give it the strength to withstand daily chewing forces.
This young lady was unahappy with her discolored upper tooth which was visible when she smiled. She had noticed that it was progressively turning gray. The tooth had had an amalgam (metal) filling placed seven years earlier. Amalgam fillings over time leach out causing a darkening of the tooth. On taking a closer look, I also noticed that the tooth had decay on the margin of the filling and the tooth. This is the reason why you should have your dentist check out your old fillings to ensure they do not develop further decay that would lead to loss of your teeth. I place a Composite (tooth colored) filling to replace the old filling.
This is a type of cavity I see more often than I used to. Unlike the common cavities that are caused by tooth decay, this type is due to acidic erosion. The most common culprit is soda beverage. The cavity so caused is smooth and is often one of the molar (back) tooth. I find it best to place a Composite (tooth colored) filling. Since there is usually little decay to be removed, a Composite filling, which attaches to the tooth can be placed without the need to carry out any drilling. To place an Amalgam (metal) filling, some drilling would be required. This is because an Amalgam filling doesn’t attach to the tooth surface and thus the dentist would have to carry out some drilling to ensure the sides of the cavity to be filled are parallel to each other so as to retain the Amalgam.
Dental cavities do not only cause pain but are also unsightly. In this case, what propted my client to come to the dentist was the latter. She lacked the confidence to smile due to the multiple cavities of the teeth on the left side. These cavites are caused by high sugar diets and a lack of regular and proper toothbrushing. Luckily for the client, a visit to the dentist was ableto restore her smile. With the use of Composite (tooth colored) fillings, the unsightly decayed teeth were repaired. To complete the smile restoration, I carried out an additional procedure. If you look carefully at two central teeth, the one on the right is fractured on the incisal (biting) surface. In such a case, the dentist will use a Bonding technique to correct the fracture. The client was able to walk out of her dental appointment with a broad smile.
Most dental cavities will occur on the occlusal (chewing) surface and on the interproximal surface (in between the teeth). It is rarely for cavities to form in the smooth outer surface as they did in the two teeth above. Prevent such cavities and frequent visits to the dentist by avoiding high sugar foods and maintain good oral hygiene. It is imperative you brush your teeth before sleeping at night. The effect of sugar is most destructive while we are asleep. The teeth were restored using Composite (tooth colored) fillings.
Build-up of tartar (calculus) on lower teeth. Tartar will often be located on the inner surface of the lower teeth. This is because the area is hard to reach while brushing. Tartar causes gum infection, bleeding gums, and bad breath. Scaling (cleaning) is recommended whenever tartar is present. Since some of the tartar is formed beneath the gums where it is not easily seen, one should visit a dentist for a check up every six months.
Stains will often build up on the back teeth near the gum line. Bad breath, bleeding gums, and consequently gum destruction will result. Scaling was performed to remove the stain and tartar build up. Regular brushing will ensure teeth remain free of tartar and stains.
Smokers will often have stained teeth due to the presence of nicotine and tar in the cigarettes. A visit to the dentist give your teeth their white shine back. Due to the penetrative effect of the stains, sometime whitenning may be required to restore your teeth to their original colour. We recommend a smoker’s toothpaste for those who decide to light-up. These toothpastes have added abrassives that give the toothpaste more cleansing abilty when compared to regular toothpaste.
Gum infection is the commonest human disease. It is caused by the presence of tartar, resulting in destruction of the gums and the bone supporting our teeth. One suffers from bad breath, bleeding gums and loose teeth. Due to the gum destruction, the teeth will appear longer than usual, as seen in the picture. Scaling to remove the tartar is necessary to prevent further progression of the infection.
Veneers remarkably change ones smile in just one or two appointments at the dentist. The dentist will use veneers to correct the color, shape, size or alignment of teeth. Veneers have a most profound effect when used to correct stains and tooth destruction associated with Dental Fluorosis. Fluorosis is caused by an unusually high intake of flouride when ones teeth are growing (just before birth till the age of twelve years). In this case, veneers were used to correct severe fluorosis that had not only resulted in stained teeth but had predesposed the teeth to decay. In just two visits to the dentist, the patient had a new lovely smile.
